Low level laser therapy (LLLT) has been used in Eastern Europe and Asia for the treatment of a wide range of conditions for many years. Its continued acceptance in these populations reflects the efficacy with which it is regarded both by clinicians and their patients. Although there have been a substantial number of reports on its clinical benefit and some practitioners have used the technique in North America and Australasia it has yet to be subjected to detailed assessment through randomised clinical trials. The purpose of this review is to stimulate interest in the technique and to encourage rigorous research into its potential value.

Background: Gag reflex is a common problem in dental procedures such as pediatric patients, third molar extraction, periodontal surgery, taking radiography, oral examination, and alginate impression. Among different anti-gagging methods, laser acupuncture that use low-level laser therapy (LLLT) or photobiomodulation seems to be the newest and most practical method. Case report: Here, we report pericard 6 (PC6) point laser acupuncture as a practical chairside method to suppress gagging in our patient just before scaling and root planning (SRP). Results: Our case was a 33-year-old man who had sever gag reflex, and therefore, could not receive dental care in his whole life. His dentist scheduled to do scaling and surgically extract his third molar. We controlled the gag reflex successfully by stimulating PC6 point on his wrist with Diode LASER. SRP and extraction of third molar were done at the same session. Conclusion: LLLT acupuncture is a preferred method due to less chair time, low invasiveness, and high safety compared to other methods. The acupoint P6 seems to be more practical than other anti-gaging points in dentistry as it is accessible when patient is on dental unit.

OBJECTIVE: Noninvasive laser therapy is a treatment method employed in many disciplines. This review article points out instances when it appears to be effective to administer such therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Noninvasive laser therapy has a number of suitable applications that cause minimal damage to the patient. Many patients are not sent to institutions equipped with relevant instruments, since physicians are burdened by a number of contraindications, many of which are incorrect. The purpose of this article was to divide these contraindications into the following three groups: correct indications, indications doubtful under certain conditions, and incorrect indications. DISCUSSION: We consider the following contraindications as correct: history of a histologically demonstrated malignant carcinoma; irradiation of the neck region in hyperthyreosis; epilepsy; exposure of the retina; and exposure of the abdomen during pregnancy. The contraindications that are doubtful under certain conditions are as follows: fever and infectious diseases; certain blood diseases; heavy blood losses; neuropathies; and irradiation in the region of gonads. The other contraindications reported in the literature are considered to be incorrect.

I would like to refer to the Editorial "Low Level Laser Therapy Is Not Low," published in Photomedicine and Laser Surgery volume 23, Number 6,2005.1 totally agree with the editor that low level laser therapy is no longer low, based on laser devices. Superluminous diodes (SLD) and polarized polychromatic light devices are mentioned by the editor as successful tools for therapy. I would like to add that nonpolarized polychromatic light devices in the visible and near infrared region can be used successfully, obviously dependent on the energy dose (fluence) of the emitted light. I would also like to point out that wavelengths in the 400-600nm region are also effective for therapy, not just the 600-1000nm range mentioned in the editor's letter.

Abstract Mood disorders are common, debilitating and impose a high-cost burden on society. Side effects and resistance to psychiatric drugs justify finding new treatment methods. Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) uses photons of light to repair, modulate and improve the function of target tissue. The purpose of this study is to systematically review the use of PBMT for the treatment of mood disorders and to identify the useful parameters of PBMT, the level of evidence of its effectiveness, and the degree of its practical recommendation. “Google scholar,” “Pub Med,” “Scopus,” and “Science direct” online databases were searched based on Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The human or animal studies written in English and published from January 2009 to August 2021 were included. Sixteen studies, which included four randomized controlled trials (RCTs), met the inclusion criteria. Infrared wavelength ranges from 800 to 830?nm, power density of 250 mW/cm2 and energy density of 60 to 120?J/ cm2 were the most used PBMT parameters. Bias risk assessment was performed to evaluate the quality of RCTs in which 2 out of 4 RCTs were evaluated as high quality. Based on grade practice recommendations, PBMT can be classified as strongly recommended for moderate grade of major depressive disorder (MDD) and recommended for anxiety disorder. In bipolar disorder, further studies are needed to recommend this therapeutic method.

Introduction: Low back pain is a very common musculoskeletal disorder. The big burden of disease necessitates investigating a more effective modality of treatments with more persistence and also less side effects. Low power laser has been proved as a pain reducing modality, but there are lack of studies comparing it with other treatments and also among the Iranian race and society. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of low level laser in patients with low back pain. Methods: Our study was a single blind, randomized controlled trial. 40 subjects with low back pain entered the study. Patients were aged between 20-70 and their pain severity scale was 3-10 according to visual analogue scale of pain (VAS).They were randomly assigned in two groups of case (true laser) and control (sham laser). Naproxen was prescribed with a free dose (250- 1000 mg/daily) in both groups. We evaluated patients’ subjective pain, functional status (using Roland Morris disability questionnaire), spinal ROM and spinal tenderness at the basic time, one and three months post- treatment. True laser group received 12 sessions of laser (160 mw) and control group took 12 sessions of sham laser (the same laser instrument in off status). An infrared laser GaAlAs, wave length 808 nm, power 160 mw and spot size 1 cm2, power density 0.16 J/cm2, in continuous mode was used in treatment. We applied laser to articular space of vertebral column, adjacent paravertebral points, pain radiating areas and tender points and also pain-controlling acupuncture points. Results: ?From 40 subjects who included the study 6 were excluded and 34 entered the analysis. There was significant improvement in pain (p<0.001 at both groups), functional status (Case group: p<0.001, control group: p=0.004) and spinal ROM (Case group: p<0.001 and control group: p= 0.007) in both groups at the end of first month, but these gains persisted to three months only in case group (p<0.001). Regarding spinal tenderness, it was disappeared in 89.47% of patients in true laser group at the end of one month but remained unchanged in 73.33% of subjects of sham laser group. Conclusion: We concluded that laser therapy (in combination with NSAIDs) is an effective and long-lasting therapeutic strategy in relief from LBP without any significant side.

Low-level laser therapy has been widely used in treating many conditions, including oral mucositis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of oral mucositis in patients undergoing antineoplastic therapy submitted to preventive and therapeutic treatment with low-level laser therapy. This cross-sectional study was carried out with 51 children and adolescents of both sexes with malignant neoplasias who developed oral mucositis and underwent low-level laser therapy. Data were collected on sex, age, type and degree of neoplasia, region affected, and remission time. 64.7% of the patients were male and were between 3 and 6 years of age (39.2%). Acute lymphoid leukemia was the most frequent neoplasm (37.3%). Regarding the maximum oral mucositis, grade 2 (41.2%) was predominant, with jugal mucosa (29.9%) and tongue (17.7%) being the most affected regions. The majority of cases presented lesion remission time between 4 and 7 days (44.0%). Most patients were young, male, and diagnosed with acute lymphoid leukemia. Predominance of grade 2 oral mucositis was observed, with jugal mucosa and tongue being the most affected regions, with the majority of cases presenting lesion remission time between 4 and 7 days. Low-level laser therapy has been shown to be an essential therapy in the prevention and treatment of these lesions, since it is a non-invasive and low-cost method.

LASMIK laser biorevitalization is a well-known technology developed in Russia that is based on laser phoresis as a method to enhance percutaneous penetration of substances. The article describes the mechanisms that act here and factors that determine the optimal parameters of the technique. The research conducted for 2 years allowed to optimize the parameters of the laser phoresis technique, testing the LASMIK laser biorevitalization technology. Our findings indicate the stimulation of facial skin blood microcirculation and, consequently, an increase in the oxygen tension in the skin, oxygenation of the facial skin blood, and an increase in the trophic support to tissues. The skin becomes 5-15 years younger, a noticeable reduction of facial wrinkles is demonstrated. The studies enabled to optimize the parameters of gels and laser exposure for the maximum efficiency of procedures that are in great demand both by cosmetologists and customers, due to non-invasiveness, simplicity and good results.
